St. Mary Immaculate Conception Church

Walnut Creek, CA

The building is a one-story structure with overall plan dimensions of 52' x 138'. There are numerous horizontal offsets in the plan configuration, and a vertical discontinuity created by a high/low roof offset. The high roof has a cruciform shape, while the overall building takes on an "H" configuration. The structure is constructed of reinforced concrete topped by a wood-framed roof.

New buttresses were added to supplement bracing of the roof at each wing wall to protect the columns at these locations. The building's transverse concrete front frame was protected by adding new shear walls and improving the connection between the frame and the exterior upper front wall. The new shear walls form the base of the new bell tower that brings new identity to the church.
