Convalescent Hospital

Lafayette, CA

The foundations of the facility were designed and constructed too shallow. In order to restore a stable foundation system that would not be affected by expansive soil conditions, the existing foundation was underpinned with a new foundation system designed to extend below the zone of seasonal moisture change.

Because of the site conditions which included both overhead obstructions and obstructions on the adjacent property, the 185 piers had to be hand excavated. 185 concrete underpinning piers were added beneath this existing one-story convalescent hospital. The construction was completed in 1997.
